Carnivale Sicily 2019

The Carnivale in Sicily has ancient origins.  It is the feast of abundance and binge eating before Lent fasting.

This is the week of the year when delicious gravies and rich dishes are served at Sicilian tables. Pasta, the traditional fat Thursday soup, along with fat Tuesdays sweets and the delicious chicchere, strips of sweet pastry dough fried and coated with powdered sugar.

Many of the most famous masks arise from the celebration, Peppe’Nappa, the king of the carnival, and many popular characters act our comic scenes.
Almost every city has their own carnival, some are more famous than others, some are more beautiful that others.  Our little town of Motta Sant’Anastasia hosts a small scale carnivale  with school children parading down the main street of town.  It reminded me of Halloween in Utah, classed all dressed in a pirate or dancer costume.

Our downstairs neighbors, Iveta and Antonio Bruno and their son Leonardo took us to Misterbianco to see the real costumes of this festival.  The real heart of the Carnivale is the typical costumes of the Sicilian tradition.  In fact you can discover the history and the ancient traditions of the island when you admire the beautiful traditional Sicilian costumes.  The parade lasts for hours, both the back and the front of the costumes are elaborate and beautiful.
Two men is costumes!

The head gear is impressive!

Don't overlook the Italian men in the background all dressed in black with their hats all set!
